To ensure a fair and rigorous review process, fellowship applicants must meet both departmental nomination and application requirements.

Students who have applied for the Kummer I&E Fellowship will be reviewed by their home department, with the top 5 department ranked candidates eligible for fellowship consideration. Only students ranked within the top five applicants by their department and nominated by a faculty member in the department will be forwarded for fellowship review.

Student Applicants will be asked to indicate their desired faculty member to have as their advisor. Only faculty at S&T who have completed the faculty commitment form are eligible to be paired with awarded Kummer I&E Fellows. 

Application Materials and Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated holistically based on the following components:

  • Academic Performance
    Undergraduate GPA will be considered for all applicants. For students who have completed or are currently enrolled in a master’s program, graduate GPA will also be reviewed.
  • Letters of Recommendation
    Two letters of recommendation (each no more than 2 pages in length) are required. These letters should be specific to the Kummer I&E Fellowship and address the applicant’s:
    • What makes this student exceptional?
    • What traits demonstrate the student’s potential for success in innovation and entrepreneurship?
    • What makes this student well prepared for pursuing a PhD at Missouri S&T
    • Capacity for impact in their field or community
  • Student Essays
    Two application essays will be reviewed to assess the applicant’s:
    • Motivation and goals
    • Alignment with the fellowship's purpose
    • Critical thinking and communication skills
  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume a current CV or resume highlighting academic achievements, research, leadership, service, and relevant professional experiences.
  • Nomination by academic department
    • Departments will be reviewing applications for students majoring in programs in their department. This process is done at the department level, not by the student applicant.
