Required Essay

In recent years, biotechnology has been described as entering a “ChatGPT moment,” with advances in gene editing, synthetic biology, and AI-driven bio-innovation accelerating at an unprecedented pace (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 2024). These breakthroughs are reshaping not only healthcare, but also agriculture, environmental protection, and sustainability (Investopedia, 2024). Far beyond the laboratory, biotechnology holds the power to tackle some of humanity’s most pressing challenges, such as food security, climate change, and equitable access to resources, while simultaneously driving economic growth and improving quality of life.

If you had the opportunity to develop a biotechnology innovation that addressed a pressing global or societal problem, what challenge would you seek to solve, and why? Additionally, how could Missouri S&T better prepare you to lead in biotechnology and bio-innovation, ensuring that these advances are ethical, sustainable, and socially impactful?
